New Media

Welcome! You are about to submit a New Media project for the 77th Annual University Film and Video Association Conference, which will be a three-day event held at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong campus in Savannah, GA from July 19-21, 2023.

There is also a virtual day on July 14, 2023 for those who cannot attend in person, so the conference is four days in total. Annual caucus meetings will be held remotely, on July 12th and 13th.

There will be a separate, lower registration fee for the virtual day. Registration for the in-person conference includes the virtual day.

New media projects vary widely and may be interactive physical installations or presentations involving more traditional audiovisual means, but all employ imaginative methods to push the boundaries of what is possible in the media arts. New media submissions of VR/AR/Interactive/ Generative technology and all categories, styles, and subjects are welcome, whether they are physical installations or projects that can be presented online.

For the VIRTUAL day, artists must be prepared to present their project in a 105-minute session. Each artist will have approximately 20-30 minutes to showcase their project, followed by discussion. (Presentation and discussion times depend on the number of projects scheduled in the session.)

For the IN-PERSON component of the conference, artists must be on site to install and supervise their work; an exhibition attendant is not guaranteed. The work must remain in the exhibition space for the duration of the conference (with setup complete the evening before the conference opens and continuing through the last morning of the conference). A 105-minute session will be scheduled to showcase and discuss the work, with each artist getting approximately 20-30 minutes for presentation, followed by discussion. (Presentation and discussion times depend on the number of projects scheduled in a session.)

You must be a current UFVA member to submit work and present it at the conference.

NOTE: All members may submit ONE item to the conference, which can be designated for the in-person event or the virtual day. Members MAY submit a second item if it is in the “flex” category (programmable during the virtual day OR any of the in-person days, at the discretion of the Conference VP). Serving as a respondent does not count as a submission.

The content areas for UFVA 2023 are as follows:

  1. Papers & Panels (includes individual papers and pre-constituted panels)
  2. Screenings
  3. Scripts
  4. New Media
  5. Workshops
  6. Multicam/Live
Items designated as “virtual” may be scheduled at any time on the July 14th virtual day and items designated “in person” may be scheduled at any time from July 19th through the 21st. We cannot accommodate requests for scheduling at specific times. Once the schedule is released, we won’t be able to make changes, so please be prepared to present your work on any of the three full days of the in-person conference and/or at any time during the virtual conference day.
You will be notified of your project’s status by the end of May.

UFVA embraces diversity of backgrounds, identities, and experiences as foundational to the future of our discipline, and encourages submission of a wide range of work that interrogates and celebrates the creative and interdisciplinary potential of film, video, and media arts. Additional information can be found in the UFVA Statement of Inclusivity.
