In the spotlight today is Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival, the most prestigious film and largest festival in Portugal dedicated to short films, reaching its 28th edition in 2020.

Assuming as main objective the promotion and diffusion of cinematographic and audiovisual works, selected according to a quality-criteria, Curtas Vila do Conde focus on the discovery of new films and filmmakers and also on the recognized legacy of Cinema.

Short film competitions with animation, documentary, fiction and experimental films, music videos, produced in 2019 or 2020, with length up to 60 minutes (exception made, under 30 minutes, for Curtinhas; youth and children; Take One!; student films; and music videos), are now open.

Side programs, to be progressively announced, will highlight not only a selection on worldwide contemporary short films but also the relations between shorts and features, music and film or art and cinema.


Highlighting the work of directors with significant relevance to our audience: Todd Solondz, Nadav Lapid, Quentin Dupieux, Kelly Reichardt, Bill Morrison, Olivier Assayas, Corneliu Porumboiu, Jo?o Pedro Rodrigues and Jo?o Rui Guerra da Mata, Miguel Gomes, Ken Jacobs, Luc Moullet, Peter Hutton, among many others from previous editions – Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tsai Ming-liang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Roy Andersson, Daniele Cipri and Franco Maresco, Alexander Sokurov, Peter Greenaway, Manoel de Oliveira, Gus van Sant, Artavazd Pelechian… They all came to Vila do Conde to present their films.

From Shorts to Features
Festival section dedicated to present new feature films. In previous editions films from Miguel Gomes, Kelly Reichardt, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Sergei Loznitsa, Yann Gonzalez, Nicolas Provost, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Aki Kaurismaki, Jim Jarmusch, Quentin Tarantino, and many others.

Music meets film – live performance of bands or artists playing live with films. In previous editions, bands and artists like Thurston Moore, Chassol, Tindersticks, Lambchop, Heliocentrics, Arto Lindsay, Dean & Britta, UFO, Tom Verlaine (Television), Ollie Teba (Herbalizer), among many others, have performed at the Festival.

Every year, exhibitions with film and video-installations are presented, from authors as Ben Rivers/Ben Russell, Manon de Boer, Christoph Girardet/Matthias Müller, Nicolas Provost, Anri Sala, Clemens V. Wedemeyer, Gustav Deutsch, Sandra Gibson/Luis Recoder, Bill Morrison, Martin Arnold, Peter Tscherkassky, Ken Jacobs, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tsai Ming-liang, among many others.

Many other activities include other screenings (panoramas and special events), Talks with artists, debates, and workshops.
