Breaking the News: An award-winning documentary now available for educational distribution

	Who decides which stories get told? As political pressure on journalism mounts and corporate and billionaire control over news platforms deepens, the power to decide which stories get told — and who gets to tell them — has never mattered more. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce we’ve just picked up the award-winning documentaryBreaking the Newsfor educational distribution. The film takes us inside the launch ofThe 19th— the acclaimed independent digital newsroom start-up founded by women in 2020 to cover the intersection of gender, politics, policy, and power. The outlet is named for the constitutional amendment guaranteeing women’s suffrage, with an asterisk acknowledging the women of color excluded from the amendment’s original promise. Two versions of the film are now available on our platform: the full-length 95-minute cut and a 59-minute abridged edition especially well-suited for classroom use. Directed by award-winning filmmakers Heather Courtney, Princess A. Hairston, and Chelsea Hernandez,Breaking the News*approaches the problem of mainstream news blind spots not with slogans or shallow nods to representation for its own sake, but by staying close to the journalists themselves — reporters doing the everyday work of covering the news in a media culture long shaped by elite institutional norms and deeply gendered power structures. The film tracks these journalists as they cover some of the defining stories of recent years — from police violence and the pandemic to anti-trans legislation and the overturning of Roe v. Wade — while also confronting internal newsroom tensions around race, gender identity, class, and professional norms. What emerges is not a story about how inclusivity will magically “fix” the media, but a clear-eyed examination of how power and inequality are embedded in the very systems that shape public understanding.


	Viewed against today’s political and media landscape,Breaking the Newsfeels less like a snapshot from the past than a case study in what’s at stake right now— a moment when corporate and oligarchic media control is deepening, local news outlets are disappearing, attacks on women’s and LGBTQ+ rights are accelerating, and it’s becoming more and more difficult to hold powerful interests and institutions to account. The result is an invaluable teaching tool for examining how corporate media power operates and why the struggle over who gets to speak and be heard remains central to democratic life. My Program in San Bernardino California is running our second annual 66 Hour Film Competition. Registration is $66 and the top prize is $660. Here’s some details about the event:

The Institute of Media Arts at San Bernardino Valley College is proud to present the 66-Hour Film Festival. This event challenges participants to create a short film within 66 hours. Filmmakers are assigned a genre, line of dialogue and a landmark of the World Famous Route 66. The top film wins a $660 prize and is featured on KVCR, a socal PBS affiliate station. This exciting event serves as the launch for San Bernardino Valley College’s Wolverine Con and International Student Film Festival. Wherever there's Route 66, there's a film!

Ted Lasso Editing Team Keynotes Avid Learning Summit on July 29 in Los Angeles

The Department of Humanities and Media Studies at Pratt Institute invites applications to its Master of Arts in Media Studies program. Pratt Institute leads in art and design innovation and education, and the Media Studies program serves as a hub for the investigation of the media’s connection to the creative industries in New York City and beyond. Our faculty engage in cutting-edge research in online media economies, sound arts, global cinema, fashion, labor, and social justice.

Media Studies at Pratt gives students the opportunity to take courses emphasizing the study of sound, music, film, television, social media, video games, fashion, and other cultural forms that mediate our relationships to ourselves, to others, and to the world. Students interpret and evaluate media images, messages, technologies, cultures, and practices through critical frameworks that centralize issues of power, inequality, and difference. Students and faculty investigate the significant social, political, cultural, economic, and aesthetic questions of our time as we read contemporary theory, rethink media forms, and revisit relevant archives to consider the ways in which gender and sexuality, race, nation, and power as well as technology mediate our understandings and experiences of the world we inhabit.

The Master of Arts in Media Studies graduate program consists of 30 credits, taken over three semesters, and a thesis, which is finished in the fourth. The coursework invites and requires students to practice both critical analysis of media and basic media-making skills.

With an MA in Media Studies from Pratt Institute, graduates are able to:

1. work as media professionals comfortable in a cinema, arts, and design environment

2. work across media platforms serving public and private organizations dedicated to promoting the arts, humanities, education, culture, and social justice

3. work as writers, curators, administrators, critics, social media specialists, or in other capacities in the world of media arts

4. situate their creative practice as artists, designers, filmmakers, writers, or arts educators within the contemporary media environment and communicate more effectively with their peers and the public about their artistic practice

5. pursue a PhD in a range of fields, including cinema, media, cultural studies, race and gender studies, queer studies, and related arts and humanities disciplines.

Green Film School Alliance Adds 16 New Schools to Its Ranks

ALLIANCE OF LEADING FILM SCHOOLS DOUBLES ITS MEMBERSHIP

TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE WITH SUSTAINABLE FILMMAKING PRACTICES

Los Angeles, CA – The Green Film School Alliance adds sixteen new schools to its ranks, more than doubling its membership to twenty-seven sustainability minded schools. The GFSA's membership now hails from seven US states and four countries across three continents. Nine member schools are on the Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 Film School list for 2022, with nine of them ranked in the top ten. These committed schools join the effort to lessen the environmental impacts of film production practices. By expanding the alliance's commitment to teaching sustainable production to a wider group of schools, they are one step closer to making “green production” a standard practice for all filmmakers.

The GFSA is also pleased to recognize that 24 student projects from five schools (AFI, NYU, UCLA, the University of Arizona, and the University of New Orleans) have earned a 2022 Environmental Media Association’s (EMA) Green Seal for Students. The Seal is presented to student productions that achieve a minimum of sustainable production goals identified in the GFSA’s Production Environmental Actions Checklist (PEACHy) for young filmmakers, a guide to reduce waste and lower their carbon footprint. The EMA 2022 Awards took place on October 8th, 2022. Additionally, the first student film to use the GFSA's tool and earn an EMA Green Seal for Students in 2021, Shedding Angels, earned a Bronze Medal at the Student Academy Awards in the Narrative category on October 20th, 2022.

The September 23rd GFSA General Membership Meeting also marked the introduction of seven Student Ambassadors to the Alliance. “It was a great introduction to the group, it was so cool to see all the interest in green filmmaking! All the information shared was really useful, and I am so grateful to have been a part of it. I’m really excited to connect more with the other student representatives that were there…” said Cal State University Long Beach Student Ambassador Riley Hodgson.

The Green Film School Alliance (GFSA), is an organization united to integrate industry-level sustainable production practices into their programs, committing to bring common language, standards, and tools to their institutions. Supported by the Sustainable Production Alliance and the Producers Guild of America Green, the alliance is built around specific actions aimed to reduce the impacts of production on the environment, share best practices, and a pledge to further sustainable initiatives at their respective schools. The GFSA’s tool “PEACHy,” is a comprehensive list of sustainable production actions broken out by department and category and is available at the GFSA site GreenProductionGuide.com/gfsa.
